Shared Tour: Testaccio District Walking Tour: Art, Street Art and Food Market Tasting Experience Semi Private Tour.
This three-hour tour will introduce guests to the art, cultures, and culinary traditions of Rome’s historic Testaccio district. The district’s roots in the city’s culinary scene date back to the Roman Empire, when Testaccio was home to a major river port called the Emporium. This port supplied much of Rome’s food items, including grains and olive oil, to the rest of the city. On this informative tour, participants will view the white marble Piramide Cestia, the only remaining pyramid of ancient Rome. They will then visit the Non-Catholic Cemetery (or Protestant Cemetery), also known as “the Lost Poets’ Garden” because it houses the remains of poets John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Guests will then make their way to the Monte dei Cocci, where ancient Romans would discard the terracotta pots used to transport food to the port by boat. At the archaeological complex of the Mattatoio (the old slaughterhouse), guests will have the chance to view a vibrant array of street art by artists from around the world.
The final stop on the tour will be the Testaccio Food Market. Here participants can wander the produce stalls and sample local specialties like suppli (a fried rice ball with tomato and mozzarella), mortadella pizza, and panini.
This tour is provided on a reserved basis prior to departure. Participants must contact the local sightseeing company upon arrival to reconfirm their tour.
